The style of a window decides how it opens, how much air it lets in, how it seals and how easy it is to clean. In Fresno ranch homes, sliders are the most common, but they are not the only choice. Here is what each style does.
What is the difference between single-hung and double-hung windows?
A single-hung window has a fixed top sash and a bottom sash that slides up. A double-hung window has two sashes that both move, so you can open the top for air while the bottom stays closed. Double-hung windows suit older homes in the Tower District and Fig Garden, where the original sash moved that way. Many double-hung sashes also tilt in for cleaning.
Are sliding windows a good choice?
Sliding windows are a good, simple choice for wide openings, and they fit most Fresno ranch homes because those houses were built with them. One panel slides past the other in a track. Modern vinyl sliders run on rollers and seal much better than old aluminum ones. Dust in the track is the main upkeep in the valley.
What is a casement window?
A casement window is hinged on one side and swings out with a crank. It opens fully for air and seals tightly when shut, because the sash presses into the weatherstripping on all sides. It works well over a kitchen sink or anywhere a slider is hard to reach. Wide casements can catch wind, so size matters.
What is an awning window?
An awning window is hinged at the top and swings out from the bottom. It can stay open a little in light rain, since the glass sheds water outward. Awning windows are often set high on a wall for privacy, in bathrooms and above other windows. They are small, so they are not used for egress.
What is a picture window?
A picture window is a large pane that does not open. It gives the most glass and the clearest view, and it seals best of all, since nothing moves. It is often paired with casements or sliders on each side. On a west or south wall, choose low-SHGC glass, because a large pane brings in a lot of sun.
What is the difference between bay and bow windows?
A bay window juts out from the wall with a large center window and two angled side windows, usually at sharper angles. A bow window uses four or more windows of the same size in a gentle curve. Both add space and light and often a seat or shelf. They need a small roof and careful sealing where they meet the stucco.
What is a garden window?
A garden window is a small box-shaped window that sticks out a short way, usually over a kitchen sink, with glass on the top, front and sides and a shelf inside for plants or herbs. In Fresno's summer sun, the glass top can make the box very hot, so low-E glass and some shade help.
Should I get grids in my windows?
Grids, also called grilles or muntins, are the bars that split the glass into smaller panes. Most new windows put them between the two panes of glass, so they never need dusting. They suit some house styles, such as Spanish or Craftsman homes, and some HOAs set the pattern. Grids are a style choice and do not change the energy rating much.
Which window style is easiest to clean?
Casement windows and tilt-in double-hung windows are the easiest to clean from inside, because you can reach the outside glass without a ladder. Sliders often lift out of the track. Picture windows only need the outside cleaned from outside. In the valley, plan to clean tracks and sills more often because of dust.
