Energy-Efficient Dual-Pane Windows in Fresno, CA

Fresno is the reference city for California's Climate Zone 13, and long triple-digit summers make solar heat the main thing a window has to stop. The NFRC label shows how each option does.

A dual-pane window has two layers of glass with a sealed space between them, often filled with argon gas. Add a low-E coating and the glass reflects much of the sun's heat before it reaches the room. In Fresno, where afternoon sun on a west wall can make a bedroom the hottest place in the house, that coating does more work than anything else on the window.

Two numbers on the NFRC label tell you how a window handles heat. The U-factor measures how much heat moves through the whole window; lower is better. SHGC, the solar heat gain coefficient, measures how much of the sun's heat comes through the glass; lower means a cooler room. Under California's 2025 energy code, Fresno is Climate Zone 13, and those numbers have limits.

If you replace more than 75 square feet of windows, the 2025 code caps the U-factor at 0.27 and SHGC at 0.23 in Climate Zone 13. For 75 square feet or less, the caps are U-0.40 and SHGC-0.35. Savings on cooling bills depend on the house, so we do not promise a number. We show you the label for each option.

Energy-efficient dual-pane windows in Fresno: common questions

Is triple pane worth it in Fresno?

Usually the bigger gain here comes from a low-E coating that blocks solar heat. Triple pane adds weight and cost. Compare the U-factor and SHGC on the labels.

What does low-E mean?

Low-emissivity: a thin coating on the glass that reflects heat. It cuts the sun's heat coming in and keeps rooms more even.

Is there a tax credit for energy-efficient windows?

Not for 2026 jobs. The federal 25C credit does not apply to windows placed in service after December 31, 2025.
