Sliders are the standard window in Fresno ranch homes, and dusty tracks and worn rollers are the usual complaint. Casements seal tighter and often give a bedroom more clear opening.
A sliding window has one or two panels that slide sideways in a track. It is the most common window in Fresno's ranch homes, because builders used aluminum sliders in so many houses from the 1950s on. A new vinyl slider looks similar but seals far better and runs on rollers that glide instead of grinding through the dust in the track.
A casement window is hinged on the side and swings out with a crank. When it closes, the sash presses against the weatherstripping all the way around, which makes it one of the tightest-sealing windows that open. It also opens fully to catch a breeze from the side on a cool summer evening. Casements are good over a kitchen sink, where pushing a slider is awkward.
Both styles come in retrofit and full-frame versions and must meet the energy code. A bedroom window also has to be big enough to climb out of in an emergency, and a casement often gives more clear opening than a slider of the same size. We measure the opening and show you both options side by side, with prices in writing.
Sliding & casement windows in Fresno: common questions
Which seals better, a slider or a casement?
A casement usually seals tighter, because the sash presses into the weatherstripping all around. A good slider still seals well.
Why is my sliding window hard to open?
Usually dirt in the track or worn rollers. Cleaning the track helps. Old aluminum sliders may need new rollers or replacing.
Can a casement replace a slider?
Often, yes, in the same opening. Check the clear opening size for bedroom windows.
