Window Installation Day: What to Expect

What to expect on window installation day: how long it takes, lead times, preparing your home, blinds, dust, summer heat and fog, and old window haul-away.

On install day, the old windows come out one at a time, the new ones go in, and each one is sealed and trimmed before the next. Most homes are done in a day or two. Here is what to expect and how to get ready.

How long does window installation take?

A single retrofit window can take an hour or two to install, and most whole-house jobs take one or two days. A full-frame job with stucco patching takes longer, and a bay window or a patio door can take most of a day on its own. Each opening is closed up before the crew moves on.

How long does it take for windows to arrive?

Replacement windows are made to order, so there is a lead time of some weeks between measuring and install day. Special colors, shapes and large units can take longer. Ask for the expected lead time in writing when you sign.

How do I prepare my home for window installation?

Clear about three feet in front of each window inside, and move furniture, plants and anything on the sills. Take down art near the windows. Outside, trim plants away from the walls and clear a path. Keep kids and pets away from the work area. Tell the crew about alarms on the windows.

What about blinds, shutters and curtains?

Take down blinds, curtains and rods before the crew arrives, or ask whether the crew will do it. Shutters mounted inside the frame may need to be removed and re-hung, and they may not fit the new window the same way. Ask before the job so it is in the quote.

Is there a lot of dust and clean-up?

There is some dust, mostly from removing old frames and sealing. A retrofit job is cleaner than a full-frame job, which cuts stucco. Drop cloths go down inside, and the crew cleans up each area and vacuums when it is done. Lead-safe rules add extra steps in homes built before 1978.

Do I need to be home during installation?

It helps to be home at the start and the end. At the start, walk through each window with the crew. At the end, open, close and lock each new window before they leave. You do not need to stay in every room during the day.

Can windows be installed in summer heat or winter fog?

Yes. Windows go in all year in Fresno. In summer, each opening is open for only a short time, but the house will get warmer, and early starts help. In winter fog and rain, the crew watches the weather and closes each opening quickly. Some sealants need a minimum temperature, which a good crew plans for.

What happens to the old windows?

Ask whether hauling away and disposal of the old windows is in the quote. Most window jobs include taking the old windows and debris away, but get it in writing. Old glass and aluminum frames are heavy and bulky to get rid of yourself.
